Our top priority with this conversion was to create more space to accommodate the client’s growing family, having four children in 3 bedroom dwelling made the creation of an extra bedroom in the loft space a must.
With the existing loft space being very small to begin we first spent some with the client to plan the layout of the loft space so that we could maximise the floor space within the loft to avoid the finished room feeling cramped and claustrophobic but also carefully positioning the new staircase to avoid losing too much space out of the existing front bedroom.
Converting the loft in houses of this size can be tricky especially when the first floor is already quite small, every care has to be taken to ensure that the new staircase is installed in a way that allows access to the new loft (that complies with Building Regulations) but also doesn’t take up too much space out of one of the bedrooms on the first floor. However, with careful planning and a bit of ingenuity almost anything is possible!
Choosing to leave the top of the stairwell open, with only a pine balustrade surrounding it and installing three large roof windows to gain the most of the natural sunlight we were able to produce a finished loft space that, though compact, felt spacious and and well lit which eventually became the client’s bedroom instead of their teenage son’s.
We’ve found over the years that some projects start of as a bedroom intended for a teenage son or daughter but upon completion of each space the client’s are so happy with the outcome that they choose the room for themselves and keep the kids all on the first floor. Well insulated, quiet and private a loft conversion provides a perfect retreat for the hard working parent!
Whatever size your home might be and however doubtful you may be that you can fit a worthwhile space within the loft, bear in mind that, as was the case with this project, that almost any loft can be converted and with many variations and styles almost anything is possible.
